Coaching for international and third-culture children

For expat and internationally mobile families: online wherever you live, or in person in Prague.

Many children move country before they have words for what they've lost. Third-culture kids can feel they're from everywhere and nowhere at once. I work with international-school families and children in the middle of a relocation, in English or Czech, across time zones.

What this covers

  • Moving to a new country, city or international school
  • Third-culture identity: not quite from anywhere, or from several places at once
  • Leaving friends behind, and missing a life that carries on without you
  • Learning a new language and culture while still working out who you are
  • Going "home" to a country that no longer quite fits
  • Different passports and expectations within one family

Languages

We work in whichever language your child is most comfortable in. Bilingual children often switch mid-session, and that's fine. Very young children communicate a great deal through play, whatever their language.

For something more concentrated than weekly sessions, the Worldwide Intensive brings me to you for several days.

Questions

Do we need to live in Prague?

No. Most international families I work with are online. In-person sessions are simply an option if you're in Prague.

What if my child isn't confident in English or Czech yet?

Tell me where things stand and we'll find what works. Younger children in particular communicate a lot through play, regardless of language.

What is a third-culture kid?

A child who spends a significant part of their growing-up years in a culture other than their parents'. Many feel at home everywhere and nowhere, find "where are you from?" hard to answer, and grieve each move more than adults notice.

We're moving to Prague with children. When is the best time to start support?

Often just before the move or in the first weeks after arriving, when everything is new at once. Sessions can start online before you leave and continue in person once you're in Prague.

Tell me what's going on

A few lines about your child, or about yourself if you're a teenager or young adult, is plenty. I reply personally within 48 hours.
